This summer, I had the privilege of joining a mission trip to the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata), and the experience left a lasting imprint on my heart. From a vibrant worship service to heartfelt conversations and joyful moments with children, every day was filled with purpose, connection, and discovery.
Sunday Worship & A Voice Across the Island
Our journey began with a powerful Sunday church service at the Arca de Salvación under the leadership of Pastor Edwin. The energy in the room was electric; voices lifted in praise, hands raised, hearts open. I didn’t understand every word, but I felt every moment. Worship in the DR reminded me that faith isn’t bound by language; it’s something you feel deep in your spirit.
Later that day, we visited a local radio station that reaches millions across the island. As I stood in the studio, I imagined the countless lives touched by the messages broadcasted daily. It made me think about the quiet ways God moves; through sound waves, through stories, through voices we may never meet.
A Church with a Vision
One of the most striking moments was visiting the future site of Pastor Edwin’s new church. It sits directly across from a prison camp; a stark contrast that felt symbolic. Standing there, I felt a strange mix of heaviness and hope. It was a reminder that light doesn’t just shine in safe places; it’s most powerful when it stands boldly in the shadows.
Community Connection & Maryanna’s Story
Each morning, we participated in Community Connection, meeting locals and sharing stories. That’s where I met Maryanna, a young woman whose strength and faith moved me deeply. We talked about God’s goodness, even in the midst of her challenges. She said, “Even when things are hard, I know God is with me.” That sentence hasn’t left me since. Her resilience made me reflect on how often I let small inconveniences shake my faith. Maryanna reminded me what trust really looks like.
Vacation Bible School & Soccer Joy
Afternoons were dedicated to Vacation Bible School, where we served over 300 energetic and joyful children. The laughter, the crafts, the songs, it was pure joy. But the highlight for me was playing soccer with the teenagers. That simple game became a bridge, connecting us beyond words and backgrounds. I saw their competitive spirit, their smiles, their camaraderie, and I felt like I was part of something bigger than myself.
Dreams in the English Club
We also spent time with students from the local English club. These young minds shared their dreams of becoming doctors, nurses, and architects. Their ambition and determination were contagious. I left each conversation feeling inspired and honestly, a little convicted. It made me realize how much I take opportunity for granted. These students aren’t just learning English; they’re building futures.
Haitian Communities & Island History
Our trip also took us to majority Haitian communities, where resilience and warmth greeted us at every turn. Listening to Tony, the DR Program Director, speak about the island’s history added depth to everything we experienced. He said, “The island’s history is layered with pain and resilience.” I saw that truth everywhere we went, in the faces of the people, in the stories they shared, in the hope that refused to be extinguished.
Final Reflections
This mission trip wasn’t just a week away, it was a journey into the heart of a community, a culture, and a calling. I came to serve, but I left feeling like I was the one who received the most. I’m grateful for every person I met, every story I heard, and every moment that reminded me of God’s presence in unexpected places.
I’m already counting down the days until next summer.
