Portrait of Ending Generational Cycles of Poverty

An individual or family empowered by Second Chance lives in a developing community around the world. This individual or family has found themselves stuck in a cycle of poverty. Through our holistic approach, we aim to make a difference in physical, emotional, mental, social, or spiritual poverty cycles. They are oppressed by the circumstances of their parents, grandparents, and possibly multi-generations before them.

One person in particular that has experienced life change through Second Chance Global is a woman from Haiti named Permissia. Permissia grew up in a family that did not have many opportunities like education, a job, or access to quality healthcare. Because of this, Permissia did not have an education and didn't have a way to earn an income. Permissia was married and later became a young widow without any children of her own. She quickly found herself homeless on the streets of Haiti. She found a job working at an orphanage where she did not make an income but received compensation through being able to live and eat at the orphanage with the kids. Unfortunately, Permissia was stuck in her situation and ultimately lived out the same poverty cycle that her parents had. It was difficult for Permissia to have hope for the future.

Less than a year after Permissia was living at the orphanage, Second Chance stepped in due to the environment's deplorable conditions for the children and volunteers living there. During that same time, Second Chance identified opportunities for empowerment for Permissia and offered her spiritual, physical, and emotional support.

In partnership with one another, Permissia moved out of the orphanage and into a home of her own. She also moved one very young child, whom she later adopted, and four at-risk young adults into her home, so they no longer had to live in an institutionalized environment. Second Chance provided her with a house, met basic necessities, including access to quality healthcare, and provided the children with access to education. Through the partnership, Permissia would start her own business and purchase necessary supplies to earn her income. Soon after, Permissia interviewed and received a permanent paid position working.

After years of partnership and shared vision, Second Chance could transition from offering full support to Permissia, making her less dependent on foreign aid. She was moving into a place of self-sufficiency. Our mission was to break the cycles of poverty that Permissia faced through empowerment so that she could impact the world for Jesus.

The young child in Permissia's care has grown up in a loving home with a mother and sibling-like figures. The young adults in Permissia's care have also had a place to live and go to school rather than being in the orphanage, where they would soon face displacement to the streets because of their age. In addition, all five children were empowered through our avenues of physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual support.

Permissia, at one point in her life, suffered from depression and had lost all hope. Others gave her no worth, yet now she is touching many lives through her testimony. Her story of change and progress inspires everyone she knows. The mission and vision of Second Chance are visibly seen in her life.

Today, Permissia has transformed her situation entirely. She has more purpose, identity, and dignity. Permissia lives in her own home, has a job, and has children she raises as disciples and partners within education, etc. Permissia has hope for a future that is much brighter. While Permissia isn't full of wealth, she has a life to give and does it diligently. She is rich in growth and progress.
